Abu Dhabi, UAE – The Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX) has announced a new competition aimed at recognizing excellence in falconry tool craftsmanship. The “Best Integrated Set of Falconry Tools for Hunting Trips” competition is designed to support artisans, inventors, and companies specializing in the creation of falconry equipment, which holds significant historical and cultural value.
Falconers require a set of essential tools when raising or training falcons, including items like falcon hoods, gauntlets, jesses, leashes, swivels, tracking devices, traditional and modern lures, all of which are typically carried in a suitable bag.
Traditionally, falconers used the “mikhla,” an open-topped linen or hemp bag with a short strap, either slung over the shoulder or carried under the armpit, to house their falconry tools.
ADIHEX, organized by the Emirates Falconers’ Club, is scheduled to take place from August 23 to 29, 2023, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC). The event is officially sponsored by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, the International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC), and ADNEC. Caracal International LLC is the sector partner, with industry partnerships including the International Association for Falconry and Conservation of Birds of Prey, the European Foundation for Falconry and Conservation, and others.
The competition’s judging criteria, established by the Emirates Falconers’ Club, emphasize the presentation of a diverse collection of traditional falconry tools and supplies, with a focus on quality manufacturing and appropriate bag or product design. Aesthetic aspects and the use of quality materials are also key factors, alongside affordability. Participation in the competition is limited to manufacturers of handmade falconry tools.
While falconry has a rich history spanning thousands of years, recent technological advancements have spurred interest in preserving its heritage while incorporating sustainable modern approaches. This includes revamping traditional tools with contemporary methods, improving training techniques, and enhancing the well-being and safety of falcons during hunts and training sessions.
