The Dubai Police have issued a stern warning about the dangers of running red lights, citing alarming accident statistics that underscore the perilous consequences of this reckless behavior. Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, has highlighted the grave risks posed by jumping red lights, which often result in fatalities or severe injuries.

Collisions at traffic signals, according to Maj. Gen. Al Mazroui, are particularly hazardous due to the angle at which they occur, significantly increasing the likelihood of death or serious harm. Many drivers, he noted, engage in hazardous speeding as they approach traffic signals, attempting to beat the transition from yellow to red. This reckless behavior frequently leads to severe accidents, especially when drivers fail to reach the signal in time and encounter oncoming traffic.

In the past seven months, the General Department of Traffic’s statistics have recorded a startling 51 accidents related to red light violations. These accidents tragically claimed the lives of two individuals and left 73 others with varying degrees of injuries, including six severe, 22 moderate, and 45 minor injuries. Moreover, Dubai Police took action by impounding 855 vehicles due to red light violations, and an astonishing 13,876 violations were issued for running red lights during the same period this year.

Under the UAE’s Federal Traffic Law, jumping red lights carries a hefty penalty, including a 1,000 AED fine, 12 black traffic points, and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. However, Maj. Gen. Al Mazroui noted that Dubai Emirate has enacted even stricter measures with Decree No. 30 of 2023. This decree imposes a 50,000 AED fine and a staggering 23 black traffic points on reckless drivers who endanger their lives and the lives of others by running red lights.

Maj. Gen. Al Mazroui reiterated Dubai Police’s unwavering commitment to the safety of all road users and the enforcement of traffic laws and regulations. In an effort to protect the community, Dubai Police are taking a zero-tolerance stance on red light violations, sending a clear message that reckless behavior will not be tolerated on the emirate’s roads.

In conclusion, the Dubai Police are urging all motorists to obey traffic signals, exercise caution at intersections, and prioritize safety on the roads. The consequences of running red lights are severe, not only in terms of legal penalties but also in terms of the potential loss of life and well-being. Dubai’s commitment to road safety remains steadfast, and its law enforcement agencies are dedicated to making the city’s streets safer for all.
