Abu Dhabi, UAE – The mysterious and captivating world of jellyfish takes center stage this summer with the launch of the ‘Invasion’ exhibition at The National Aquarium (TNA) in Al Qana, Abu Dhabi. This unique exhibition, set to open on Saturday, July 15, 2023, invites visitors to explore the enigmatic life of jellyfish, from the deep ocean to the shallow beaches, spanning the globe from the North to the South Pole.

The ‘Invasion’ exhibition at TNA promises a mesmerizing experience, featuring a stunning collection of jellyfish species, including stinging sea nettles, UFO-like moon jellies, sun-farming upside-down jellies, and the long-distance travelers of the jellyfish family, the giant blubbers. These fascinating creatures are showcased in specialized aquariums, designed to keep them suspended in their aquatic environment.

Behind the scenes, expert marine biologists at TNA have mastered the intricate jellyfish life cycle within specialized breeding facilities, making this unique display possible. The exhibition derives its name from the term ‘invasion,’ which is commonly used when blooms of jellyfish suddenly appear in oceans without apparent reason. Science has revealed that these natural surprises are all part of the jellyfish’s master plan.

Jellyfish possess a remarkable life cycle, including a dormant phase in which jellyfish polyps, plant-like creatures, remain on the seafloor. When significant environmental changes, such as sudden temperature shifts, occur in the ocean, the polyps release an army of genetically identical jellyfish clones. These brainless, 98% water creatures often swarm the beaches, occasionally causing concern among the public.

Paul Hamilton, the General Manager and Curator of TNA, expressed his enthusiasm for the exhibition, stating, “This exhibition is another step in the right direction for TNA, which already exhibits the most diverse collection of animals in the region. Our guests are always surprised by the size of the facility, the length of the journey, and the sheer number of animals they encounter. ‘Invasion of the Jellyfish’ is yet another world-class attraction that meets the expectations of the Abu Dhabi public.”
