Dubai, UAE – Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, has issued a stern warning to motorists against using mobile phones while driving, emphasizing the grave risks it poses to lives on the road.
Al Mazroui stated that using a phone while driving not only diverts a driver’s attention but also significantly elevates the likelihood of accidents. He pointed out that distractions caused by mobile phone use while driving have resulted in 99 accidents over the past eight months, leading to the tragic deaths of six individuals and injuring 58 others. Among the injuries, five were severe, 32 were moderate, and 21 were minor.
During the same period, a staggering 35,527 violations related to mobile phone use while driving were recorded, with offenders facing an 800 AED fine and four traffic penalty points.
Dubai Police has launched multiple awareness campaigns to highlight the severe consequences of mobile phone distractions while driving, including showcasing real incidents where such distractions led to accidents, incapacitation, or fatalities. Al Mazroui lamented that some only grasp the importance of this issue when tragedy strikes.
The General Department of Traffic has identified several primary causes of fatal accidents in recent years, such as negligence towards other road users, abrupt lane changes, failure to maintain safe distances, and speeding. Mobile phone distraction has emerged as a common factor in most of these incidents.
Al Mazroui urged all road users to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, avoiding any distractions like making calls, texting, or browsing social media while driving. He stressed the importance of responsible driving to safeguard lives on the road.
