Dubai, UAE – In a groundbreaking move at COP28 in Dubai, food systems are taking center stage as a crucial solution to the climate crisis. Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, the UAE’s minister of climate change and the environment, has spearheaded efforts to prioritize sustainable practices, calling on businesses to align with the “Impact” pillar of the National Sustainability Campaign.

Kibsons, a UAE-based farm-to-fork grocery delivery service, has emerged as a regional leader in environmentally conscious food systems since its establishment in 1980. With a strong commitment to transparency and sustainability, Kibsons focuses on reshaping consumer habits for a healthier planet.

CEO and Co-founder Halima Jumani emphasized Kibsons’ dedication to minimizing its environmental impact over the past 40 years. The company has implemented several initiatives as part of its Kibsons Cares program, showcasing significant achievements:

Solar Energy: Kibsons has achieved a 50% reduction in electricity use through its expansive 13,000-square-meter facility, resulting in a 25% average annual reduction, reaching 50% during winter months.

Water Conservation: The company aims to reuse more than 75% of water through its recycling plant, contributing to significant water savings by purifying and recycling the water used in its cold storage facility.

Waste Management: Kibsons composts 100% of organic waste in its dedicated composting plant, producing half a ton of recycled compost per month and reducing reliance on landfills.

Recycling: Over 90% of plastic and paper waste at the Kibsons facility is recycled. The company also collects and sanitizes delivery boxes for reuse, minimizing packaging wastage.

Consumer Engagement: Kibsons actively involves customers in its sustainability efforts by offering a ‘no packaging’ delivery option, using eco-friendly recyclable paper bags, and encouraging the return of delivery boxes for reuse.

Additionally, Kibsons addresses food waste by introducing an ‘ugly but tasty’ range, allowing customers to purchase imperfect or nearing-expiration produce at discounted rates.

Jumani stressed the importance of collective industry efforts to transform food systems, citing their significant contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. Kibsons aims to lead by example, not only benefiting consumers but also inspiring other regional entities to embrace sustainable practices at scale.
