Sharjah, UAE – In a significant development, the Sharjah International Marine Sports Club has officially announced the acquisition of Gillman Racing team, led by four-time UIM F1H2O World Champion Scott Gillman. The team will be rebranded as the Sharjah Team, effective from the upcoming 2024 season.
Scott Gillman, a prominent figure in powerboat racing and a former World Champion, will continue his involvement as the Team Manager in this exciting new venture owned by the UAE Emirate of Sharjah. The operation is under the direction of Ahmed Al-Hosani, the General Manager of the Sharjah International Marine Sports Club.
As part of the team restructuring, Canadian racer Rusty Wyatt has been signed as the team’s primary driver. Wyatt, a 28-year-old from Ontario, known for his achievements in powerboating, will make his F1H2O racing debut in Indonesia next month. His impressive background includes accolades such as the Canadian Boating Federation’s Rookie of the Year in 2012 and notable successes in the American Powerboat Championship.
Meanwhile, Filip Roms has been retained as the team’s second driver. The 29-year-old Finnish driver, with 55 race starts since entering the F1H2O racing scene in 2012, secured an eighth-place finish in last year’s Drivers’ Championship. Roms has two podium finishes to his name, including a runner-up position at the 2016 Grand Prix of France.
The eagerly awaited 2024 UIM F1H2O World Championship will kick off on February 23rd-25th at Lake Toba in Indonesia. Notably, Toba Caldera, the venue for the opening round, holds UNESCO Global Geopark status, recognized in 2020 as one of the 20 geoparks in Indonesia.
