Dubai, UAE – A new cricket league, World Champions of Legends (WCL), has been launched with the approval of the England Cricket Board (ECB). The league will feature six teams, each representing a cricketing nation: England, Australia, India, Pakistan, West Indies and South Africa. The league will be played at Edgbaston Cricket ground in Birmingham from July 3 to July 13, 2024.
The league promises to deliver high-quality cricket with some of the most famous names in the sport. The teams will consist of both retired and active players, who will compete for the WCL trophy and a prize money of $10 million. Some of the players who have confirmed their participation are Shahid Afridi, Yuvraj Singh, Ian Bell, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and David Warner.
The league also has some celebrity involvement, as Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandes has become the co-owner of the England Champions team. She joined the WCL Founder and CEO Harshit Tomar, Meteor Developers CEO Praveen Kumar Sharma and Meteor Partner Omar La Omour at a press conference in Dubai, where they unveiled the England Champions jersey.
Fernandes said that she was excited to be part of the league and that she had learned a lot about cricket over the years. “This is my first association with a league. It is a new, exciting experience for me,” she said.
Tomar said that he was grateful to the ECB for giving him the permission to start the league and that he had followed all the regulations to ensure a fair and transparent tournament. He said that the league was based on the concept of nationality, rather than franchise, which would make it more appealing to the fans and the players.
Sharma said that there would be no draft system, as the players would be selected by the team owners and the captains. He said that this would make the league more competitive and unpredictable.
The league will have a round-robin format, where each team will play five matches. The top four teams will qualify for the semi-finals, followed by the final. The league will also feature some of the most anticipated cricketing rivalries, such as India-Pakistan and England-Australia.
The league is expected to attract a huge audience, both in the stadium and on the television, as it will be played during the peak of the summer in England. The league will also be broadcasted in other countries, where the teams have a large fan base.
The league is being touted as a revolutionary and innovative venture in the cricketing world, as it will bring together some of the legends of the game in a new and exciting format. The league will also provide an opportunity for the fans to witness some of the best cricketing action and entertainment.
