Dubai, UAE – Dubai Police, in a joint operation with the Suspects and Criminal Phenomena Department and other key partners, have arrested 17 individuals for begging on the first day of Ramadan. This action is part of the ‘Fight Begging’ campaign, which aims to uphold Dubai’s image by eradicating begging.
Colonel Ali Salem Al Shamsi, director of the Suspects and Criminal Phenomena Department, reported that the campaign has consistently reduced the number of beggars each year through firm measures. The first day of Ramadan resulted in the arrest of 13 males and four females.
The police have a yearly security strategy to counteract begging, focusing on areas known for such activities. Colonel Al Shamsi emphasized the negative impact of begging on community security and the country’s image, noting its association with crimes like theft and exploitation of vulnerable groups.
Colonel Al Shamsi reminded that official channels and charities provide support to those in need, such as the “Iftar for the Fasting” service. He urged the public to donate to legitimate charities to ensure aid reaches the right people and to report any begging incidents to the Dubai Police contact centre or through the “Police Eye” service on their smart app. He also cautioned against engaging with or responding to beggars’ online pleas, advising the public to report any such cases to www.ecrime.ae.
