Dubai, UAE – OLAY, a global skincare authority, has unveiled a groundbreaking Specialization on Coursera, the renowned online learning platform. The “Introduction to Cosmetic Science and Ingredients” Specialization is OLAY’s inaugural program on Coursera, crafted to enlighten learners about the essentials of skincare and inspire a diverse group of learners, particularly women and women of color, to venture into the field of cosmetic science.
This collaboration aligns with a crucial period for STEM careers, addressing the low representation of women, who currently constitute only one-quarter of the STEM workforce. OLAY’s new Specialization is the first in a series aimed at fulfilling their pledge to double the number of women in STEM and triple the number of women of color in STEM by the year 2030.
In a robust push to support this initiative, OLAY and Coursera will allocate $2 million in scholarships over a span of three years. Between 2024 and 2026, 5,000 recipients will be granted a one-year Coursera Plus subscription, which includes access to over 6,900 courses, entry-level Professional Certificates, and practical projects that impart crucial business, technology, and data science skills. Applications are especially encouraged from women and women of color.
The Specialization is delivered by OLAY’s cadre of in-house cosmetic scientists, including the distinguished Dr. Rolanda Wilkerson, whose extensive research in skin and hair science has significantly contributed to the enhancement of Procter & Gamble’s leading cosmetic products.
Dr. Wilkerson expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, underscoring OLAY’s dedication to making a positive impact on the STEM pipeline and supporting women across the STEM spectrum. “We are thrilled to partner with Coursera to make STEM education accessible to all aspiring STEM learners,” said Dr. Wilkerson. “Now, anyone, anywhere can grasp the fundamentals of skincare directly from OLAY scientists through the ‘Introduction to Cosmetic Science and Ingredients’ course.”
The comprehensive program will immerse learners in the cosmetic industry’s history and equip them with knowledge about pivotal ingredients in cosmetic products and their interaction with the skin’s biological structure. By the conclusion of the four-course program, learners will have a thorough understanding of:
- Skin physiology and the creation of skin models
- Skincare, skin concerns, and the identification of efficacious skincare ingredients
- Core strategies and best practices for developing innovative and sustainable cosmetic formulations
- Implementation of cosmetic quality control and safety protocols
Participants who successfully complete the program and pursue beauty roles at Procter and Gamble are encouraged to highlight their cosmetic science certification during the application process.
With OLAY’s steadfast commitment to inclusivity in STEM, Coursera is excited to welcome them into the partner community and collaborate in expanding the realm of opportunities within cosmetic sciences.
