Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – The Saudi Ministry of Culture and the art collective teamLab have announced the construction of a major new museum, teamLab Borderless Jeddah, in the Jeddah Historic District. This will be the first-ever permanent teamLab Borderless museum in the Middle East, exhibiting over 50 experiential artworks created by teamLab using digital technology.
The museum is being built on the shores of Alarbaeen Lagoon in the Red Sea coastal city of Jeddah, offering panoramic views of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jeddah Historic District. The project is part of the Saudi Ministry of Culture’s revitalisation programme for the district, aiming to preserve its historical and cultural urban centre as a vibrant cultural hub that reflects the Kingdom’s diverse history and innovative spirit.
teamLab Borderless is a unique concept where artworks move out of rooms, communicate with other works, influence, and sometimes intermingle with each other, forming one borderless world. Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in this borderless art and ‘wander, explore, and discover’.
The first teamLab Borderless museum opened in Tokyo in June 2018 and welcomed over 2.3 million visitors in its first year, setting a world record for the most visited museum by a single art group. The new teamLab Borderless Jeddah, a collaborative initiative between the Saudi Ministry of Culture and teamLab, is expected to contribute significantly to the development of a thriving cultural ecosystem in the Kingdom.
