Abu Dhabi, UAE – At the 14th Session of the IRENA Assembly in Abu Dhabi, Ambassador Faisal Niaz Tirmizi of Pakistan expressed gratitude to IRENA and the UAE for their roles in promoting a sustainable future. He praised IRENA’s Director General, Francesco La Camera, for his leadership.

Ambassador Tirmizi emphasized the critical need for a global energy shift to combat climate change, referencing the devastating floods in Pakistan in 2022 as an example of the severe consequences of climate inaction. Despite Pakistan’s low emission levels, he noted the country’s high vulnerability to climate change, ranking 5th on the Global Climate Risk Index.

The Ambassador called for the fulfillment of climate finance commitments to aid developing countries in their climate change mitigation efforts. He commended the UAE’s successful hosting of COP28, which resulted in the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund.

Tirmizi announced Pakistan’s ambitious goal to increase its renewable energy sources, including hydropower, to 60% by 2030, highlighting the potential benefits for energy equity and emission reduction.

He concluded by stressing the importance of a just, inclusive, and equitable global energy transition, urging IRENA members to support developing countries through grants and concessional financing to ensure a swift and fair energy transition.
