Red Sea Global and Warner Bros. Discovery unite on Red Sea coral documentary

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Red Sea Global (RSG), in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, unveils a groundbreaking documentary film, “Beneath the Surface: The Fight for Corals,” slated to debut on Earth Day, 22 April 2024, on Discovery Channel networks worldwide. This collaborative endeavor aims to illuminate the critical efforts of Red Sea Global in combating the detrimental effects of climate change on coral reefs, while showcasing the innovative conservation initiatives undertaken in the Red Sea region.

John Pagano, Group CEO at Red Sea Global, underscores the organization’s commitment to environmental stewardship and regeneration, stating, “At Red Sea Global, we are inspired by nature and led by science.” Pagano emphasizes the significance of global collaboration in preserving oceanic ecosystems, highlighting the pivotal role of Saudi Arabian free diver Salma Shaker and the groundbreaking coral research conducted by scientists at Red Sea Global and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

The documentary transcends geographical boundaries, offering viewers a glimpse into the unexplored reefs along Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coastline. By unraveling the mysteries of this biodiverse territory, the film underscores its vital role in supporting the global ecosystem, while exploring the potential benefits of coral research for ecosystems worldwide.

Kerrie McEvoy, Director and Head of Factual Channels at Discovery Networks EMEA, expresses Warner Bros. Discovery’s pride in partnering with Red Sea Global on this transformative project, stating, “As a company, we believe in the power of storytelling to entertain and inspire change, and this film exemplifies that commitment.”

The documentary features insights from a diverse group of experts, offering a comprehensive view of the current state of reefs globally, their ecological significance, and ongoing conservation efforts. A first exclusive look of the film was unveiled during a side event to COP28 in Dubai, garnering anticipation for its official premiere on Discovery Channel networks across the US, Europe, Turkey, The Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

In addition to highlighting conservation efforts, the documentary underscores the sustainable development initiatives implemented by Red Sea Global. The Red Sea destination, which welcomed its first guests in 2023, boasts off-grid infrastructure powered by solar energy, alongside extensive reforestation efforts aimed at restoring and preserving natural habitats. Moreover, the imminent opening of Thuwal Private Retreat and the progress of AMAALA reflect the organization’s steadfast commitment to responsible tourism and environmental conservation.

As the world commemorates Earth Day, “Beneath the Surface: The Fight for Corals” stands as a testament to the urgent need for collective action in safeguarding marine biodiversity and preserving the natural wonders of our planet.
