Historic Unmanned Air Taxi Trial Conducted in Mecca

Mecca, Saudi Arabia – Front End, a leader in integrating advanced technology across sectors, in partnership with EHang, the world’s leading urban air mobility (UAM) technology platform company, has successfully conducted the first unmanned air taxi trial in Mecca. This landmark event marks a significant step towards enhancing the transportation system for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, promising a faster, more efficient, and sustainable experience for millions of pilgrims.

The trial, supported by the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) and in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and Logistics Services, the Ministry of Hajj, and the Ministry of Interior, showcased the potential of government-private partnerships in driving technological advancements in Saudi Arabia. Abdulaziz Al-Duailej, President of GACA, emphasized the importance of this trial in integrating Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) solutions into the nation’s aviation landscape, adhering to the highest safety standards and ensuring seamless integration into existing air traffic systems.

A Milestone for Urban Air Mobility

The demonstration aimed to address the unique logistical challenges of the Hajj pilgrimage by efficiently moving pilgrims between key locations, thereby enhancing the overall experience. Majid Alghaslan, Chairman and CEO of Front End, highlighted the trial as a trailblazing effort towards revolutionizing Hajj transportation. He emphasized that this initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to foster a “Connected Kingdom” and serve as a gateway for growth opportunities in Saudi Arabia and the wider region.

Conducted in a low-risk area within protected airspace, the trial not only demonstrated the feasibility of eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft but also contributed to setting the regulatory framework for their deployment. These eco-friendly air taxis promise a cost-effective solution for urban transportation, addressing congestion issues while supporting the Kingdom’s sustainability goals.

EHang’s Founder, CEO, and Chairman, Huazhi Hu, expressed his enthusiasm for the debut flight of the EH216-S pilotless eVTOL in Saudi Arabia. He noted that this significant milestone in EHang’s internationalization efforts showcases the potential of pilotless eVTOL products and solutions for widespread adoption in the Middle Eastern market. Hu emphasized the ongoing partnership with GACA and Front End to establish a benchmark for regular AAM operations in Saudi Arabia, driving progress in both regional and global AAM markets.

The successful trial of the unmanned air taxi in Mecca stands as a testament to the power of collaboration between government bodies and private companies in advancing technological innovations, ultimately contributing to a more efficient and sustainable future for urban mobility in Saudi Arabia.
