Abu Dhabi, UAE – The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) has partnered with Khalifa University of Science and Technology to launch an ambitious program aimed at fostering future-ready STEM leaders. This collaborative effort is set to enhance the skills and knowledge of teachers and 11th-grade students across Abu Dhabi’s Charter Schools.

This dual-focused initiative will see teachers undergo extensive training from Khalifa University’s world-class faculty over the course of a year. The program will also provide peer mentorship, with university faculty and students offering personalized support to high school students. This approach aims to facilitate a smooth transition from high school to university, setting the stage for academic excellence in STEM disciplines.

“Joining forces with Khalifa University, we reaffirm our commitment to establish robust, purpose-driven partnerships that bridge the gap between academia and industry,” stated Dr. Ahmed Sultan Alshoaibi, Acting Executive Director of the Higher Education Sector at ADEK. “Through this initiative, our goal is to provide students with upskilling opportunities at any stage of their academic journey, ensuring they are equipped to join top higher education institutions.”

The program’s specialized training will allow teachers to gain insights into students’ proficiency levels and adapt learning environments accordingly. They will also learn to integrate new teaching methodologies using digital platforms and technology.

The peer mentorship model aims to create a supportive environment that fosters curiosity, a sense of belonging, and enhanced learning experiences. Students eligible for this mentorship will be selected based on their academic performance in mathematics, determined by MAP Growth study results and teachers’ recommendations.

Professor Sir John O’Reilly, President of Khalifa University, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative. “We are delighted to collaborate with ADEK on this transformative program to elevate STEM education across Charter Schools in Abu Dhabi. Aligning with the directives of the UAE’s wise leadership to boost human capital development, we aim to equip the next generation of Emirati leaders with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in STEM fields through world-class training for teachers and personalized mentorship to students.”

The inaugural phase of the program has begun at Al Ghad School – Charter Schools, focusing on enhancing problem-solving skills and the practical application of mathematical concepts. This pilot aims to improve EmSAT math scores, test-taking strategies, academic skills, and personal growth through the ALEKS online assessment platform and the Musabaqat math competition.

The bespoke pilot program, lasting one year, will employ diverse teaching methodologies tailored to meet the varying learning needs of students. It combines a rigorous math curriculum with hands-on exercises, innovative tools, and peer mentoring.

Upon successful completion of the pilot phase, the program will be expanded to include all Charter Schools in Abu Dhabi, reinforcing the commitment to developing the Emirate’s human-knowledge capital.
