Dubai, UAE – The General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology at Dubai Police has recently unveiled a series of groundbreaking accomplishments in the fields of science, technology, and criminology. These achievements underscore the Department’s dedication to enhancing police work, public safety, and the criminal justice system through innovative breakthroughs and meticulous forensic investigations.
The announcement was made during a press conference, attended by high-ranking officials including Major General Ahmad Thani bin Ghalita Al Muhairi, Director of the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology, his Deputy for Administrative Affairs Brigadier Maki Sulaiman, and Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Rashid Hamdan Al Ghafri, Director of the International Centre for Forensic Science. Numerous officers, journalists, and media representatives were also present.
Expert Team and Capabilities
The Department boasts a highly skilled team of 280 experts, comprising 172 males and 108 females. These professionals hold advanced degrees in various disciplines, including law, police science, natural sciences, technology, engineering, and medicine. Their expertise has been instrumental in the Department’s recent successes.
Research and Innovations
Over the past five years, the Department has registered 143 intellectual classifications, published 78 scientific research papers, developed 20 research projects, and obtained six patents. Additionally, the Department is affiliated with 262 international and local organizations, enhancing its global and local influence in forensic science.
Forensic Examination Requests
In 2023, the Department handled 58,344 requests for forensic evidence examination, providing crucial reports to authorities across Dubai and other emirates.
ISO Certifications and Partnerships
The Department has achieved seven ISO certifications, including four in administrative and three in technical areas. It has also established 30 strategic partnerships and received 18 accolades in various scientific and forensic fields.
Combatting Synthetic Drugs
The Department’s Drugs Observatory Center, ‘Marsad,’ detected 16 new types of synthetic drugs between 2022-2023. This achievement reflects the Department’s advanced capabilities in toxicology and chemistry, ensuring the detection of harmful substances affecting public health.
Innovations and Inventions
Highlighted innovations include the “Male DNA Analysis Tools (RM-yplex1 and RM-yplex11),” the Rapid Test Cup, and an advanced firearm residue examination device. These inventions demonstrate the Department’s commitment to advancing forensic technology.
Awards and Accolades
The Department has received numerous awards, including accreditation certificates from the American Board for Impairment Rating and Disability Determination for eight forensic doctors, two awards at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference, and recognition from the International Board of Forensic Engineering Sciences. Additionally, the Department earned a Silver Medal at the Seoul International Invention Fair and the prestigious Minister of Interior’s Excellence Award for the Biometric Fingerprint Tunnel project.
Specialized Forensic Capabilities and DVI Efforts
The Department employs advanced forensic methodologies, including human remains recovery, blood spatter analysis, underwater crime scene investigation, forensic entomology, criminal profiling, and facial reconstruction. Notably, the Department contributed to the UAE team of Disaster Victim Identification deployed to Libya, providing essential expertise in identifying disaster victims.
