Dubai: Zimbabwean cricket legend and Gulf Giants head coach, Andy Flower, has highlighted the significance of scouting young talent and offering them game time in high-level tournaments like the DP World ILT20, emphasizing its importance in developing cricket in the UAE. Flower, the former wicketkeeper-batter and coach of England, is keenly observing the ongoing DP World ILT20 Development Tournament 2024, where players have the chance to secure one of 12 remaining spots in the upcoming DP World ILT20 Season 3 squads.

Flower praised the DP World ILT20 for providing UAE players invaluable exposure by competing alongside international stars. He emphasized that the DP World ILT20 Development Tournament plays an equally crucial role in nurturing talent, providing a platform for local players to showcase their skills and push for inclusion in top-tier squads.

“The DP World ILT20 is brilliant for cricket in the UAE,” said Flower. “Players gain great experience and exposure, and I expect the same high standards in Season 3. The Development Tournament is an extension of that, and I’m here to scout for the Gulf Giants.”

The 56-year-old, widely regarded for his global coaching experience, expressed optimism for the growth of cricket in the UAE, drawing parallels to the recent rise of cricket in the USA. With two UAE players required in each playing XI during the ILT20, Flower hopes to see this number increase in the future, allowing for greater confidence and experience for local players at the international level.

Flower has been particularly impressed with emerging UAE talents like Aayan Khan, Zuhaib Zubair, Junaid Siddique, and Muhammad Wasim, noting their potential to excel at the international stage. As head coach of the Gulf Giants, who became the inaugural champions of the ILT20, Flower is eager to build on last season’s success.

“We are aiming to bring home the trophy again,” Flower stated, referencing the team’s historic triumph. “Strengthening our squad with UAE players is a key part of our strategy. We’re looking for a specialist batter and quick bowler from UAE to give us more tactical flexibility.”

The DP World ILT20 Development Tournament, currently underway at the ICC Academy Oval 1, offers a valuable opportunity for emerging cricketers to make their mark and contribute to the evolving cricket landscape in the UAE.
