Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: The Red Sea International Film Festival (Red Sea IFF) has announced its 2024 Festival Favourites—a selection of twelve critically acclaimed films that have made waves across the global festival circuit. These films, known for their compelling storytelling and artistic brilliance, celebrate cultural diversity and innovation in cinema.

Kaleem Aftab, Director of International Programming, highlighted the festival’s commitment to showcasing diverse perspectives. “These films explore real, human themes, from social issues to relationships and the search for meaning in an increasingly complex world,” Aftab said.

The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos

This year’s selection features a strong representation from Africa, including two standout films from the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The Legend of the Vagabond: Queen of Lagos tells the story of a young mother in Lagos’s waterside communities, while Freedom Way examines the rise of a ride-sharing app and the challenges faced by its founders and users. Another TIFF hit, Black Dog, winner of the Un Certain Regard Prize at Cannes, is also featured. The film explores the bond between an ex-convict and a stray dog in China.

From the Arab world, Ala Eddine Slim’s Agora, winner of the Pardo Verde Award at Locarno, and Hala Elkoussy’s East of Noon provide a glimpse into the region’s unique narratives.
