Dubai, UAE – As the DP World ILT20 Season 3 heads into its thrilling finale, cricket legend Wasim Akram has backed the Desert Vipers to emerge victorious, citing their dominant performances throughout the league stage. The Vipers were the first team to secure a playoff berth this season, showcasing their prowess with both bat and ball. Defending champions MI Emirates finished second in the points table, while Sharjah Warriorz and Dubai Capitals clinched the third and fourth spots after commanding victories on Super Sunday, fueled by electrifying crowd support during the double-header in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Akram, who has been part of the tournament as a commentator, highlighted the intense competition that characterized the league. “I love coming here for the DP World ILT20. The quality of cricket has been exceptional, and the consistency of the pitches has allowed for thrilling contests. Until yesterday, only one team was certain of their playoff spot, which shows how fiercely competitive this season has been,” he remarked.
The Desert Vipers, with seven wins from nine matches, have been the standout team this season, bouncing back strongly after a disappointing campaign last year. Akram revealed his admiration for the Vipers, not just for their table-topping performance but also for their strong Pakistani connection. “For me, Desert Vipers are my favourite team, and there’s a reason for that. They have three Pakistani players in their squad, and we’ve seen some excellent performances from them. Azam Khan hasn’t fired yet, but there’s still time for him to deliver a match-winning innings,” Akram said.
The league has also provided a platform for UAE players to shine alongside international stars, and Akram praised the growth of local talent. Players like Muhammad Waseem, Aayan Afzal Khan, and Muhammad Rohid have impressed with their performances. “Waseem has been consistent as an opener, Rohid has shown promise as a fast bowler, and Aayan has proven to be a reliable all-rounder. These young players are gaining invaluable experience by sharing the dressing room with some of the best in the world,” Akram noted.
He emphasized the importance of consistency and learning from global icons. “The vision behind this league is to groom UAE players, and it’s working. It’s time for UAE to become one of the top-performing Associate Member nations,” Akram concluded.
With the playoffs set to begin, the Desert Vipers will aim to cap off their stellar season with the ILT20 trophy. Meanwhile, MI Emirates, Sharjah Warriorz, and Dubai Capitals are ready to challenge for the title, promising an exhilarating finale to Season 3.
