Sharjah, UAE – The second edition of the Lumos competition, a unique platform for gifted and talented students, was successfully held at Ambassador School in Sharjah. Organized by Smitha Paul, Founder and Head of BTG (Bridge the Gap) Education Consultancy & Training Services, Lumos aims to provide opportunities for students aged 6 to 17 to showcase their talents in unconventional ways.

The event saw over 40 participants from various schools competing across seven specialized categories, judged by a panel of esteemed juries. The competition was designed to challenge students to step out of their comfort zones, with on-the-spot topics and tasks that encouraged creativity, critical thinking, and adaptability.

Category Highlights

  1. Insight Incubators: Focused on sustainable working models using recyclable materials, this category saw two teams competing. Manthena School secured first place, while Ambassador School took second.
  2. Oratory Excellence: With over 10 pairs participating, students delivered impromptu speeches on topics given on the spot.
  3. Art & Design: Participants designed sustainable fashion costumes and jewelry within an hour, showcasing their creativity and eco-consciousness.
  4. Lego: Six teams built innovative models centered around the theme of sustainability.
  5. Chess: Ten students competed in this strategic battle of wits.
  6. Story Writing: Twelve participants crafted stories on the spot, choosing from various genres.

A Platform for Growth

What sets Lumos apart is its emphasis on spontaneity and exploration. Unlike traditional competitions, students were not given topics in advance, encouraging them to think on their feet. Remarkably, 80% of participants opted to try new activities they were unfamiliar with, leaving the event with a sense of pride and newfound skills.

Every participant received a certificate and a goody bag, while winners were awarded gold or silver medals, special gifts, and certificates. Complimentary snacks were also provided to keep the young minds energized.

Gratitude and Acknowledgments

The event was graced by special guests, including Frando, a prominent businessman and Executive Director for Human Endeavors, and Regi Abraham, a retired educationist with 27 years of service. Shanthi Venkatraman, Vice Principal of Ambassador School, also attended the event.

A special mention was made for Ambassador School Principal, Arogya Reddy, who opened the school’s doors to host the event. His empathetic leadership was praised as a reflection of the school’s commitment to children’s development and growth.

Looking Ahead

Following the successful events in Dubai and Sharjah, Lumos plans to expand to other emirates by the end of 2025, continuing its mission to nurture gifted and talented students across the UAE.

Lumos is more than just a competition; it is a celebration of creativity, resilience, and the spirit of exploration. As Ms. Smitha Paul aptly put it, “Lumos is about taking the first step towards success by exploring uncharted territories.”
