Dubai: Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, marked International Women’s Day by underscoring the dual reality faced by women globally: their heightened vulnerability to climate crises and their unparalleled potential as leaders in driving sustainable solutions.
In a statement, Dr. Al Dahak emphasized that women and girls bear the brunt of climate impacts, citing staggering statistics. “An estimated 4 out of 5 people displaced by climate change are women and girls,” she noted, adding that during extreme weather events, women and children face mortality rates 14 times higher than men.
Yet, the Minister stressed that this frontline experience equips women to spearhead transformative climate action. “Women are uniquely situated to be agents of change,” she declared, pointing to the UAE’s own progress in empowering women as sustainability leaders.

Women Leading the Charge in UAE’s Green Transition
The UAE’s strides in gender equality and climate innovation took center stage in Dr. Al Dahak’s address. Emirati women now represent 70% of university graduates nationwide, with 56% of government university graduates in STEM fields being women—a critical asset in tackling environmental challenges. “Our young women are demonstrating exceptional talent in science, technology, and engineering, unlocking benefits for climate, biodiversity, and society,” she stated.
Women-led organizations in the UAE are also at the forefront of pioneering sustainable solutions, from renewable energy projects to biodiversity conservation. Dr. Al Dahak highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering this leadership, stating, “By empowering women with tools, resources, and education, we amplify their lasting impact on climate action.”
A Legacy of Empowerment and Future Resilience
The Minister credited the UAE’s leadership for its decades-long dedication to women’s empowerment, enabling them to “effect real change and foster sustainability.” She honored trailblazing Emirati women who paved the way for today’s successes while urging continued momentum. “By championing inclusive climate strategies and environmentally conscious solutions, we commit to a future where generations of women thrive,” she affirmed.
As the UAE continues to advance its net-zero ambitions, Dr. Al Dahak’s message resonated as both a tribute and a call to action: investing in women’s potential remains indispensable to global climate resilience.
