Abu Dhabi, UAE – Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with the Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center, wrapped up its groundbreaking exhibition “An Ocean of Plankton” this week, merging marine science, art, and conservation to spotlight the vital role of plankton in ocean ecosystems. The event, part of the university’s “2025 Year of the Ocean” initiative, included a conference and immersive photo exhibition aimed at fostering public engagement and environmental stewardship.
A Fusion of Science and Art
The conference brought together leading experts, including Dr. Elise Marquis, Director of the Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center, and renowned biologist-artist Christian Sardet alongside filmmaker Noé Sardet. Attendees embarked on a journey through the microscopic world of plankton, exploring their ecological significance through scientific discourse and striking visuals.
The Sardet duo’s large-format photographic prints, displayed in the university’s Atrium, revealed the hidden beauty of plankton species, while their storytelling underscored urgent conservation messages. “Plankton may be invisible to the naked eye, but they are the foundation of marine life—shaping food webs, carbon cycles, and even the air we breathe,” said Christian Sardet.

Calls to Protect Marine Biodiversity
Dr. Marquis emphasized the center’s commitment to public education: “This exhibition isn’t just about showcasing plankton; it’s a rallying cry to protect our oceans. We hope to ignite curiosity and inspire action, especially among youth, to safeguard these critical organisms.” She also highlighted future collaborations with academic institutions to advance marine conservation aligned with the UAE’s sustainability goals.
Prof. Nathalie Martial-Braz, Chancellor of Sorbonne Abu Dhabi, noted the university’s role as a hub for interdisciplinary dialogue. “By bridging science, art, and community, we aim to drive meaningful progress toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the UAE’s vision for ocean preservation,” she stated.
Engaging the Next Generation
Complementing the exhibition, the Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center organized interactive workshops for children, offering hands-on activities to teach the importance of plankton. These sessions aimed to nurture young minds to become future advocates for marine ecosystems.
The “Ocean of Plankton” initiative marks a pivotal step in raising awareness of the unseen heroes of our seas, proving that even the smallest organisms can inspire waves of change.
