Desert Vipers cruise to four-wicket win over Sharjah Warriorz to top table

Dubai, UAE – Desert Vipers tightened their grip on the top of the DP World ILT20 Season 4 table with a commanding four-wicket victory over Sharjah Warriorz at the Dubai International Stadium on Saturday.

A clinical bowling performance, led by David Payne, skittled Sharjah Warriorz for a paltry 90 before a composed batting effort guided the Vipers home with 37 balls to spare. The win took Desert Vipers to 14 points from eight matches, confirming a top-two finish in the league stage.

Payne set the tone early with a superb spell of seam bowling, removing Johnson Charles and Tom Kohler-Cadmore inside the powerplay and conceding just nine runs in his first three overs. Sharjah struggled to gain any momentum as Khuzaima Tanveer and Naseem Shah applied relentless pressure, restricting the Warriorz to 28 for 2 after six overs.

The innings unravelled further when Payne struck again just after the powerplay to dismiss James Rew for a duck, completing an outstanding return of 3 for 14. With boundaries drying up, Noor Ahmad and Sam Curran tightened the screws in the middle overs, picking up key wickets as Sharjah slipped deeper into trouble.

Tom Abell battled on with a composed unbeaten 35 off 36 balls, but found little support from the other end. The lower order folded quickly, with Tanveer and Naseem cleaning up the tail as Sharjah collapsed from 76 for 7 to be bowled out for 90 in 17.5 overs.

Chasing a modest target, the Vipers lost early wickets to Taskin Ahmed, who removed Fakhar Zaman and Hasan Nawaz. However, Sam Curran ensured there was no panic, counter-attacking with five boundaries in a well-measured 37 off 31 balls.

Curran anchored the chase alongside Dan Lawrence as the Vipers steadily knocked off the required runs despite tidy spells from Taskin, Adil Rashid and Dwaine Pretorius. Late wickets gave the Warriorz brief hope, but Tom Bruce’s quick-fire unbeaten 10 sealed the result as Desert Vipers reached 91 for 6 in 13.5 overs.

Player of the Match David Payne praised the collective strength of the Vipers’ bowling unit. “It was about bowling across the bat and staying out of their scoring areas. We’ve got so many world-class bowlers, and our strength lies in how well we communicate and work together,” he said.

Sharjah skipper Sikandar Raza admitted his side was under pressure. “When your back is against the wall, character is revealed. Every game for us now is like a final,” he said, as the Warriorz remain rooted to the bottom of the table.
