Dubai, UAE – Huawei has unveiled the Mate X7, a foldable smartphone aimed at eliminating the trade-offs that have long defined the category, particularly around camera quality and durability. With a focus on professional-grade imaging, reinforced screen technology, and sustained performance, the Mate X7 positions itself as a serious alternative to traditional flagship “slab” phones.
Foldable devices have often been criticised for fragile screens and underwhelming cameras. Huawei seeks to counter that narrative with the Mate X7’s True-to-Colour Camera system, featuring a large sensor and a 10-step adjustable physical aperture designed to improve light sensitivity by 32%. The telephoto lens, with what Huawei claims is the largest aperture on a foldable phone, increases light intake by 86%, enabling clearer 3.5x zoom photography. Video capabilities are equally ambitious, with 4K recording and a reported dynamic range of up to 17.5EV, supported by a second-generation LOFIC sensor.
Durability is another central focus. The outer display is protected by Ultra Durable Armour Kunlun Glass, while the inner folding screen introduces an industry-first three-layer composite structure combining non-Newtonian fluid protection, ultra-thin impact-resistant glass, and a carbon-fibre support layer. Huawei says this results in a 20% improvement in impact resistance and a 100% increase in bending resistance compared with the previous generation. The device is also rated IP58 and IP59 for dust and water resistance, targeting reliability in harsh environments, including desert climates.
Powering the device is a 5,600mAh silicon-carbon battery, supported by 66W wired and 50W wireless fast charging, alongside an enhanced cooling system for sustained performance.
The Mate X7 features a 6.49-inch outer display and an 8-inch inner screen, both with adaptive 1–120Hz refresh rates and peak brightness levels of up to 3,000 nits. AI-powered features such as photo editing, group shot optimisation, and real-time translation further leverage the large-screen experience.
With the Mate X7, Huawei is signalling that foldables no longer need to compromise on performance, durability, or imaging—challenging competitors to follow suit.
