Abu Dhabi, UAE: Pakistan has positioned itself among the world’s fastest-growing renewable energy markets, driven by community-led initiatives and ambitious national targets, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam said while delivering Pakistan’s national statement at the 16th International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly.

Addressing delegates from across the globe, Alam outlined Pakistan’s swift transition toward clean energy, noting that by the end of 2025 the country had achieved 12 gigawatts (GW) of off-grid solar capacity and over 6 GW through net-metered systems. She described the solar expansion as largely people-driven, reflecting both economic necessity and public trust in renewable solutions.

She further highlighted a historic milestone in Pakistan’s power sector, revealing that renewables accounted for 53 percent of total electricity generation in the last fiscal year — the highest share in the country’s history. This progress, she said, demonstrates Pakistan’s firm commitment to sustainable development despite economic and climate challenges.

Alam emphasized the government’s focus on energy equity through initiatives such as the Punjab Solar Panel Scheme 2026, which provides free or subsidized solar systems to low-income households, directly addressing energy poverty.

Drawing attention to climate resilience, she shared examples of distributed solar kits restoring electricity and livelihoods in flood-affected communities, presenting the model as a scalable solution for climate-vulnerable nations.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s goal of achieving 60 percent renewable energy in its power mix by 2030, Alam urged IRENA and its Member States to expand concessional financing for developing countries. She called for critical technologies such as energy storage and green hydrogen to be treated as global public goods and stressed the importance of regional cooperation to enhance shared energy security.

Concluding her remarks, she reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the Paris Agreement and expressed confidence in continued technical and financial support from IRENA to help build a resilient, inclusive, and low-carbon future.
