BANGKOK – Thailand has officially launched the Thailand Green Tourism Plan 2030, a comprehensive roadmap aimed at transforming the Kingdom into a premier global destination for environmentally and socially responsible travel.
The initiative, led by the Department of Tourism, marks a strategic shift from high-volume tourism to high-value, meaningful experiences. By the end of the decade, the government aims to see Thai destinations ranked among the world’s Top 100 sustainable hubs, aligning with national pledges for environmental stewardship and cultural preservation.
The “Thailand Good Travel” Seal of Approval
The centerpiece of this plan is the introduction of the Thailand Good Travel mark. This national sustainability insignia acts as a rigorous benchmark for:
- Local Communities & Enterprises
- Tour Operators
- Small Accommodations (up to 50 rooms)
The mark is developed in alignment with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) criteria, ensuring that certified businesses meet international standards in social equity, economic sustainability, and environmental protection.
Empowering the Industry: The Green Coach Program
To support local businesses in this transition, the Thailand Green Coach program has been established. This mentorship initiative provides operators with the tools and expert guidance needed to overhaul their practices. By late 2025, hundreds of participants had already joined the program, signaling a massive industry-wide commitment to the 2030 vision.
“Sustainable tourism is no longer an option but a mandate,” stated Nattareeya Thaweewong, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. “By embedding the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we maintain our cultural identity and international competitiveness.”
A Coalition for Change
The plan is supported by a powerful alliance of over 49 organizations, including the Green Destinations Foundation and Travelife for Tour Operators. This coalition ensures that Thai tourism businesses are integrated into global value chains, making it easier for eco-conscious travelers from the Middle East and beyond to identify and book responsible stays.
