News DeskAbu Dhabi, UAE – The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) has announced its participation in the Open Masters Games Abu Dhabi 2026, using the global sporting event as a platform to raise awareness about Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and champion the role of physical activity in building inclusive and supportive communities.
Hosted in the region for the first time, the Games will bring together athletes and community members from around the world. NMSS aims to spotlight people living with MS alongside the wider public, reinforcing the message that movement can be flexible, empowering, and accessible to all.
The Society’s involvement serves as the flagship activation of its Move for MS initiative for 2026. Now in its third year, the initiative encourages individuals of all abilities to engage in any form of movement to raise awareness and funds that support MS programs and care. To date, Move for MS has involved more than 4,000 participants and raised over AED 800,000 to support people living with the condition.
At the Games, NMSS will be represented by Masters of Strength, a team comprising people living with MS and dedicated advocates. Team members will compete in cycling, swimming, and running disciplines. The lineup includes Ameera Al Jaberi, Deborah Dunne, Mohammed Al Harbi, Marie Meillaud, Sirik Deurloo, Leen Almasood, and Mohamed Selim. While competing individually, they stand together as a symbol of the resilience, diversity, and determination of the MS community.
Maral Alexandrian, Acting Executive Director of NMSS, emphasized the importance of visibility and representation. “Improving the lives of people living with MS requires more than awareness. It requires visibility, participation, and representation in everyday life,” she said. “NMSS is committed to ensuring people living with MS are seen, included and represented across community through connection, sport and wellness.”
She added that the Games offer an opportunity to challenge perceptions and foster dialogue. “Through sport, we can open dialogue, challenge perceptions, and represent the resilience and diversity of the MS community. We are proud of the Masters of Strength team whose discipline, consistency, and continued commitment embody the spirit of this shared mission.”
Throughout the Games, taking place from 6 to 15 February, NMSS will host an interactive booth at Hudayriyat Island, where visitors can meet Society representatives, connect with members of the Masters of Strength team, and learn about NMSS programs and support services.
The event also provides an opportunity for families, friends, and supporters to attend and show encouragement. Most venues will offer free public access, while competition schedules and participant locations will be shared through NMSS social media channels.
