Abu Dhabi, UAE – SEHA, a subsidiary of PureHealth and part of the Middle East’s largest healthcare group, has achieved a remarkable medical milestone at Tawam Hospital after successfully correcting a severe spinal deformity in a four-year-old boy diagnosed with the rare Stuve-Wiedemann syndrome.
The young patient had previously undergone several surgeries on his limbs and was suffering from a serious 75-degree thoracic scoliosis that had not improved despite conservative treatment, including bracing. Doctors also observed a significant chest deformity and noticeable shoulder imbalance.
Before proceeding with surgery, specialists at Tawam Hospital conducted a thorough evaluation using CT and MRI scans to rule out congenital abnormalities or neurological complications. The hospital’s anaesthesia team also carried out a detailed assessment to ensure the child’s condition was optimised for the complex procedure.
The two-hour surgery was led by Dr. Abdul Nazeer Moideen, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Paediatric Spine Deformity Specialist. The team performed a minimally invasive posterior scoliosis correction using MAGEC — magnetically assisted growing rods — a technique designed to gradually guide spinal growth in young patients.
The operation required close coordination between anaesthetists, the operating room team, and implant specialists. According to the medical team, the child experienced minimal blood loss during the procedure, recovered steadily, and was discharged just three days later.
Dr. Abdul Nazeer Moideen described the case as a testament to the hospital’s expertise in treating complex paediatric spinal conditions.
“This case demonstrates the ability of our highly skilled team to manage severe scoliosis in children of any age, even those with multiple underlying medical conditions,” he said. “The collaboration between the multidisciplinary team was exceptional from start to finish, ensuring the surgery was both safe and effective. The procedure was performed on Tuesday, and the child was discharged on Friday.”
Dr. Basil Al Arabid, Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at Tawam Hospital, said the successful outcome reflects the hospital’s continued commitment to advanced paediatric care.
“The success of this surgery highlights our dedication to delivering world-class care for young patients with complex health needs,” he said. “By combining innovation, advanced surgical techniques and strong teamwork, we are able to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and their families.”
The achievement further strengthens Tawam Hospital’s reputation as a leading centre for paediatric spinal care in the region. It also underscores the expertise of its surgeons, anaesthetists, intensivists and rehabilitation specialists in managing highly complex medical cases with precision and compassion.
With this latest success, Tawam Hospital continues to demonstrate that even the most challenging cases of scoliosis can be treated safely and effectively, offering new hope to young patients and their families.
