Abu Dhabi, UAE: EDGE, a leading global advanced technology and defence group, has announced the launch of the first BR71 MK II Combattante corvette, NRA Ekuikui II, for the Angolan Navy under a landmark €1 billion contract.
The vessel was launched at the CMN shipyard in Cherbourg, France, marking a significant milestone in Angola’s naval modernisation programme. The first-of-class corvette was designed and constructed by CMN, the internationally renowned naval shipbuilder known for its expertise in designing and building naval and commercial vessels as well as mega yachts.
As part of the wider programme, EDGE entity Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) has already delivered six 12-metre high-speed interceptor vessels and one 16-metre interceptor. These vessels form part of the Angolan Navy’s expanding fleet and are expected to enhance maritime surveillance capabilities and support national security operations.
David Massey, CEO of ADSB, said the programme highlights the strength of international collaboration driving the project forward.
“Through close collaboration with CMN and our international partners, we are achieving major milestones for the Angolan Navy at a rapid pace. Just two years after signing the contract, the first 71-metre corvette has been launched and advanced interceptor vessels have already been delivered,” he said.
Massey added that two additional corvettes are planned under the agreement. One will be built by CMN in France, while the other will be constructed by Abu Dhabi Ship Building in the UAE following a transfer of technology — a move that reflects the depth of cooperation between the partners.
Further enhancing the vessels’ capabilities, EDGE entity ANAVIA is integrating the Swiss-designed HT-100 NAVAL unmanned helicopter system onto the BR71 MK II corvettes. Each corvette will be equipped with two unmanned aerial systems fitted with electro-optic and infrared sensors, fully integrated into the vessels’ combat management systems.

Ishan Sahgal, Founder and Co-CEO of ANAVIA, said the technology will significantly strengthen maritime surveillance operations.
“We are delivering a proven force multiplier for maritime surveillance to the Angolan Navy. Along with the advanced performance and reliability of the HT-100 system, we are also providing a custom-designed control station, integrated logistics support, and specialised training,” he said.
The second BR71 MK II Combattante corvette is currently under construction at ADSB’s shipyard in Abu Dhabi, while the third vessel is being built by CMN NAVAL in Cherbourg.
The launch of NRA Ekuikui II marks another step in the growing defence and security partnership between Angola and the United Arab Emirates. In October last year, EDGE signed a letter of intent with Angola’s Ministry of Interior to support the implementation of a comprehensive border security programme.
