Dubai, December 23, 2024: In a historic first, Dubai Basketball (9-3) is hosting Igokea M:Tell, one of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s most successful basketball teams, for a Christmas Eve ABA League showdown at the Coca-Cola Arena. Beyond the game’s stakes, this matchup carries a deeper message of unity, fraternity, and the healing power of sports.
To mark the occasion, the Igokea M:Tell squad was picked up by Dubai Basketball in their specially arranged private charter, with both teams sharing the same plane for the three-hour journey from Croatia. This gesture – a first in ABA League, symbolizes a bridge across the diverse histories of players of South East European origins who form the heart of the ABA League’s teams.
Dubai Basketball’s General Manager, Dejan Kamenjašević, said: “At Dubai Basketball, we believe in the power of sport to unite people. Hosting Igokea M:Tell is not just about competition; it’s about fostering friendships and showing the world how basketball can unite communities that once experienced division. This collaboration is a testament to our league’s spirit of progress and harmony.”
Igokea M:tell’s Vuk Radiojevic said “ We are tremendously honored to be treated this way by Dubai Basketball. This shows the power of sport in reuniting people. We are excited to be playing in Dubai. “
A Festive Game with High Stakes
This game offers a crucial opportunity for either team to solidify their position among the league’s elite, as Igokea currently sits just 2 games behind Dubai in the standings.
Dubai Basketball will again be led by captain Klemen Prepelič, who has enjoyed a remarkable career across Europe’s top leagues, becoming one of the most respected names in European basketball.
Starting his professional career in Slovenia with Helios Domžale and Union Olimpija, Prepelič quickly gained recognition for his sharpshooting and basketball IQ. His journey took him to Turkey’s Banvit and eventually to Real Madrid, one of Europe’s most storied basketball franchises. During his time with Madrid, Prepelič played a pivotal role in their campaigns in both the Spanish ACB League and EuroLeague.
Reflecting on his career, Prepelič said: “Playing for clubs like Real Madrid and Valencia taught me the value of hard work and teamwork at the highest level. Now, leading Dubai Basketball feels like the next big chapter in my journey.”
Leading Dubai Basketball: A New Legacy
Prepelič’s decision to join Dubai Basketball marked a significant moment in his career. As captain in the team’s inaugural ABA League season, he has taken on the dual role of player and mentor, helping to shape the club’s identity and culture.
“Being the first captain of this team is an honor, but it also comes with great responsibility,” he said. “It’s about setting the standard — on and off the court — and creating a family-like bond within the team. That’s how you build success.”
Tuesday’s game against Igokea M:Tell is crucial for Dubai Basketball as they look to build on their 4-1 home record, and maintain their momentum in the playoff race. With Igokea M:Tell currently ranked 10th and hungry to climb the standings, the game promises to be a competitive battle.
Prepelič emphasized the importance of maintaining focus: “Every game in this league is a challenge. We need to give 120 percent every day — whether it’s in practice, meetings, or on the court. The margins for error are small, and it’s up to us to stay locked in.”
Entertainment Awaits
As Dubai Basketball prepares for its return to Coca-Cola Arena, fans can look forward to more than just exciting on-court action. The club has recently signed Lebanese star player Wael Arakji, who made his debut on Sunday, already stunning the fans with his abilities on the court.
The night will feature holiday entertainment for all, featuring a meet & greet with Santa Claus, a festive half-time performance, Sharmila Dance Center’s cheerleaders, and interactive fan experiences to make the event unforgettable.
Prepelič summed up the excitement. He said: “This is just the beginning for Dubai Basketball. Our fans have been amazing, and their energy fuels us. Let’s make Coca-Cola Arena the place to be this Tuesday.”
The event is more than just a basketball game; it’s a celebration of unity, resilience, and the enduring power of sports to transcend borders and histories. Tuesday’s matchup promises to be a highlight of the ABA League season and a festive evening for all in attendance.
