Dubai, UAE – Pakistani cricket star Fakhar Zaman is gearing up to represent the Desert Vipers in the DP World ILT20 but has his sights firmly set on returning to international cricket.

In a candid conversation on the Vipers Voices podcast, the 34-year-old top-order batsman expressed confidence in his return to the Pakistan squad, revealing that health issues had sidelined him since the ICC T20 World Cup in June 2024.

“After the T20 World Cup, I got sick and wasn’t fit to play,” Fakhar explained. “But now I am fully recovered, and you will see me in the next international series Pakistan plays.”

With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan on the horizon, Fakhar’s focus is on making an impact. The tournament holds special significance for the left-hander, who announced himself on the global stage during the 2017 edition with a match-winning century against India in the final.

“My plan has been around the Champions Trophy,” Fakhar said. “I started my journey there in 2017, and now I’m very excited for the next edition.”

Although incumbent Pakistan opener Saim Ayub’s injury could create an opportunity, Fakhar expects to remain with the Desert Vipers for the entire tournament. He expressed admiration for Ayub, predicting a bright future for the young opener.

Fakhar’s addition to the Desert Vipers has been hailed by Director of Cricket Tom Moody, who described him as “a true match-winner.” For Fakhar, joining the Vipers was an easy decision, thanks to glowing endorsements from fellow Pakistani players like Shaheen Afridi and Shadab Khan.

“I was already a fan of this team before joining,” Fakhar said. “The management, environment, and mindset of the team are exceptional.”

Known primarily as an opener, Fakhar is ready to adapt his role to meet team requirements. “For me, the team always comes first,” he said. “While I prefer to open, I am happy to play wherever the team needs me.”

One player Fakhar is particularly eager to team up with is Sherfane Rutherford. “He’s one of the best cricketers in the T20 format. I’m excited to share the crease with him,” Fakhar remarked.

With a balanced squad of young talent and experienced players, Fakhar is optimistic about the Desert Vipers’ prospects in the DP World ILT20. “If luck is on our side, you will see us in the finals,” he said.

The Desert Vipers kick off their campaign on January 9, taking on the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders at Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
