Abu Dhabi, UAE – Phil Oliver, CEO of the Desert Vipers, has been named Middle East Sport CEO of the Year at the prestigious SPIA Sports Industry Awards, held at Space 32 in Abu Dhabi on May 20. Organised by Interact and Sport360X, the awards celebrate excellence and innovation in the regional sports industry.

Under Phil Oliver’s leadership, the Desert Vipers have emerged not only as a top cricket franchise but also as a global example of how sport can drive meaningful social and environmental progress.

Competing in the DP World ILT20 league, the Desert Vipers feature a roster of world-class talent, including international stars such as Wanindu Hasaranga, Sam Curran and Lockie Ferguson. The team continues to make its mark both on and off the pitch and looks ahead to Season 4 of the league, launching on UAE National Day weekend, a moment that blends elite cricket with national celebration.

A trailblazer in sustainable sport, the Desert Vipers have redefined what it means to be a responsible franchise. Under Oliver’s guidance, environmental ambition has been transformed into industry-leading action. The Vipers were the first cricket team worldwide to:

  • Publish both a Carbon Footprint and Plastic Impact Report, setting a new benchmark for transparency in professional sport.
  • Play an entire season in kits made from locally sourced, fully recycled materials, supporting the UAE’s circular economy.
  • Eliminate single-use plastic water bottles from team operations, replacing them with filtered stations and reusable bottles for all staff and players. The team also introduced the Sustainability Match, a dedicated fixture highlighting climate action through cricket. With fan activations, educational exhibits, and sustainable event practices, the match has become a model for how sport can engage audiences in environmental awareness.

Oliver’s decision to hire franchise cricket’s only full-time Sustainability Lead ensures that these efforts are not short-term campaigns but part of a strategic, long-term vision. Sustainability is now embedded into the Vipers’ identity, drawing global recognition and influencing change across the region.

Beyond the environment, Oliver’s commitment to community development is equally ambitious. He appointed the ILT20’s only full-time Development Lead and launched the UAE’s first fully- funded girls’ cricket team, winners of the 2025 R66T Dubai Cup.

At the heart of this vision is the Desert Vipers Schools Programme, which has engaged over 12,000 students across the UAE. The programme blends cricket coaching with hands-on learning in sustainability, leadership, and healthy lifestyles, nurturing the next generation of athletes and changemakers.

The Desert Vipers’ mission has been further strengthened through strategic partnerships with Bluewater Group, JA Resorts, PalmFit, Carrefour, Balqis Capital, and Cleveland Clinic. Together, these alliances support in-school initiatives and drive climate action efforts, demonstrating how sport can be a powerful vehicle for social impact.

Phil Oliver, CEO of the Desert Vipers, said: “It is a huge honour to receive this prestigious award. Being recognised among such esteemed company is a testament to the incredible team effort behind everything we do. I want to thank every member of the Vipers family for their hard work, energy, and unwavering commitment.

We’re proud to be forging a new and different path in franchise cricket, but we also know there’s still a long journey ahead. None of this would be possible without the support of our partners, whose shared vision has enabled us to drive meaningful change and develop strategies that we hope will leave a lasting legacy in the UAE and beyond.

Thank you to Sport360X and Interact for hosting such a brilliant and inspiring event.”

A Vision Backed by Lancer Capital

The Desert Vipers is owned by Lancer Capital LLC, a global investment firm chaired by Avram Glazer. This marks Lancer Capital’s first foray into cricket, expanding its diverse sports portfolio, which includes ownership stakes in the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Manchester United Football Club. Lancer Capital’s investment underscores a commitment to leveraging sport as a platform for community engagement and sustainable development.

Phil Oliver’s visionary leadership has turned the Desert Vipers into a movement, one that is elevating sport, enriching communities, and putting the UAE at the forefront of the global conversation on sustainability in sport.
