Dubai, UAE – West Indies cricket sensation Shimron Hetmyer has kicked off his tenure with his new DP World ILT20 franchise, the Desert Vipers, by setting an ambitious triple challenge for the opening months of 2026. The 28-year-old left-handed powerhouse is targeting a win in the UAE-based league, securing a spot in the West Indies squad for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, and then lifting that global trophy too.

Hetmyer, who previously tasted ILT20 success with the Gulf Giants in the league’s inaugural year, believes repeating that feat with the Vipers is the crucial first step toward his international aspirations.

ILT20 Glory a Stepping Stone

Speaking after his wildcard signing, the Guyanese star expressed his determination to repay the faith shown by the Vipers.

“I am going to try to repay the faith shown in me by the Vipers in the upcoming (DP World) ILT20,” Hetmyer said. “Hopefully, we can gel as a team and lift the franchise’s first trophy.”

The batter, fresh off a runners-up finish with the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the latest Caribbean Premier League, sees the domestic success as a vital springboard for his return to peak international form. “I am also hoping I can get into my best form leading up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and then just see as much as possible how best I could help the West Indies to get the trophy, after a successful (DP World) ILT20,” he added.

Team Confidence and Coaching Comfort

Hetmyer joins the Vipers as a replacement for fellow countryman Sherfane Rutherford, who moved to the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders. The new signing is bullish about the Vipers’ prospects, a side that made the finals in the league’s first season.

“I am sure our chances this year are high because I have seen the team get to the finals in the first season and even this past season as well,” he noted. “So, it is fun to join a team with a very good record under their belt.”

He revealed that positive feedback from former Vipers Sherfane Rutherford and Sheldon Cottrell influenced his decision, particularly highlighting his comfortable history with Head Coach James Foster.

“He (Foster) is one of my favourite coaches I would say, because he is easy-spoken and he is someone that you could easily just go up to and ask him questions, have a conversation with him or sit and talk cricket and just relax,” Hetmyer explained.

Shirt Number Nods to Early Feat

In a personal touch, Hetmyer intends to request shirt number 189 with the Desert Vipers—a number he also wears in the CPL. He revealed the significance: it represents his highest batting total, scored when he was just 13 years old. The player, who notably led the West Indies to victory at the 2016 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, brings a wealth of global franchise experience, including stints in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Pakistan Super League, and Major League Cricket.

He holds the UAE’s league in high regard, calling it one of his favourites due to the challenging yet high-quality pitches and larger ground sizes.

“It (DP World ILT20) is one of my favourite leagues to play in,” he stated, noting that the conditions—where the ball can “nip around” early on—help him maintain his batting shape, which benefits his game when he returns to the smaller boundaries and less responsive pitches of the Caribbean and India.
