Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabia took a major step towards transforming its luxury tourism landscape with the unveiling of Dream of the Desert — the Kingdom’s first ultra-luxury train — during the ninth edition of the Future Investment Initiative (FII) in Riyadh.

The mock-up of the lavish rail car was revealed by Italy’s Arsenale S.p.A., in collaboration with Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR), the Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services, the Transport General Authority (TGA), the Ministry of Culture, and the Saudi Tourism Authority (STA).

Presented under the FII’s theme “The Key to Prosperity”, the showcase marked a defining moment for luxury rail travel in the region, offering a first look at the Italian craftsmanship, design excellence, and immersive hospitality that will characterize the new train.

Italian artistry meets Saudi heritage

Designed by acclaimed architect Aline Asmar d’Amman, founder of Culture in Architecture, the interiors of Dream of the Desert pay homage to Saudi heritage while reflecting the timeless sophistication of Italian design.

The spaces are adorned with rich wood carvings, reinterpreted traditional weavings, and a palette inspired by the Kingdom’s deserts — earthy tones, sandy browns, and hints of oasis green illuminated by Murano-blown glass lights reminiscent of oriental lanterns.

“The Dream of the Desert is a moving masterpiece born from the dialogue between Italian craftsmanship and Saudi vision,” said Paolo Barletta, CEO of Arsenale S.p.A. “This project embodies the shared pursuit of beauty, innovation, and hospitality that unites our two cultures.”

Luxury on rails

The train will feature 31 private suites and two presidential suites, accommodating up to 66 guests, alongside two restaurant cars and a Majlis lounge.

Dining options will include both authentic Saudi and international cuisines with Italian fusion elements, curated by world-renowned chefs to deliver a Michelin-level fine-dining experience.

Beyond its interiors, the journey itself will offer bespoke on- and off-board experiences — including curated excursions, private performances, and personalized services — designed to immerse guests in the Kingdom’s culture and landscapes.

Showcasing Saudi Arabia’s scenic heart

Set to begin operations by the end of 2026, Dream of the Desert will run from Riyadh across 1,300 kilometres of existing railway lines, stopping at destinations that showcase Saudi Arabia’s diverse natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Each itinerary, lasting one to two nights, will include visits to a UNESCO World Heritage site and another soon-to-be-announced hidden gem.

A symbol of Vision 2030 progress

Dr. Bashar Khalid AlMalik, CEO of Saudi Arabia Railways, said the project reflects the advanced progress of the Kingdom’s transport and tourism sectors and serves as a model partnership between SAR and international investors.

Meanwhile, Eng. Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistics Services and Chairman of SAR, described the unveiling as “a reflection of the remarkable transformation of the Kingdom’s railway sector and its world-class travel experiences.”

He emphasized that Dream of the Desert forms part of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, designed to enhance quality of life and attract global investment into Saudi Arabia’s growing tourism ecosystem.

A new chapter in experiential travel

Bringing together Italian design excellence and authentic Saudi hospitality, Dream of the Desert aims to set a new global benchmark for experiential rail journeys.

With only 33 suites, the train promises an intimate, immersive travel experience that celebrates heritage, innovation, and the timeless beauty of Saudi Arabia’s landscapes.
