Dubai, UAE – The evolution of smartphones took a decisive turn in the summer of 2024 when Huawei unveiled the world’s first commercially available trifold smartphone, redefining expectations for mobile innovation and multitasking.
Officially named the HUAWEI Mate XT ULTIMATE DESIGN, the device was widely praised for proving that meaningful breakthroughs were still possible in the mature smartphone market. So advanced was its design that competitors took more than a year to introduce viable alternatives in the emerging trifold category.
Designed to meet growing demand for immersive media consumption and seamless multitasking, the Mate XT offers the largest single-screen smartphone experience to date. Its 10.2-inch display folds down into a conventional smartphone form factor, allowing users to shift effortlessly between phone and tablet use, reducing reliance on laptops and other devices for everyday tasks.
Huawei has now expanded the Mate XT line with a new white vegan leather finish, set to be available from next week. Previously offered only in red and black, the new colour option adds a refined, minimalist aesthetic to the premium device.
Despite increasing competition, the Mate XT continues to be regarded as the benchmark for trifold smartphones. Its distinctive Z-shaped folding mechanism — with one side folding inward and the other outward — enables a single continuous display. When fully unfolded, it transforms into a tablet, while in folded mode, one-third of the same screen serves as the outer display, delivering a more cohesive user experience.
Industry comparisons suggest rival trifold devices still lag behind the Mate XT in areas such as charging speed, battery capacity and screen resolution. More than a year after its debut, the Mate XT remains the slimmest and lightest trifold smartphone on the market.
Performance and durability also set the device apart, supported by Huawei’s Advanced Precision Hinge System, crafted from ultra-strong, high-strength steel to ensure smooth and precise folding over long-term use.
A year on from its launch, the Mate XT continues to define the trifold category it created, with Huawei maintaining its lead as competitors work to catch up in a segment reshaped by its innovation.
