AL AIN, UAEThe vibrant beats and joyous rituals of the traditional Emirati wedding filled the air at Al Ain Museum on Thursday, as the institution hosted a special cultural panel dedicated to “Al Zaffa.”

Held on January 15, 2026, as part of the ongoing “Museum Talks” series, the event titled “Al Zaffa: A Living Wedding Tradition” drew a diverse audience eager to explore the deep-rooted social customs that define the Emirati bridal procession. The session offered a rare glimpse into the history of these celebrations, underscoring their role in preserving national identity and community values.

The discussion was anchored by a distinguished panel of experts, including historian Saeed Al Suwaidi, heritage expert Ateeqa Al Muheirbi, and intangible heritage researcher Al Hath Al Kuwaiti. Together, they guided the audience through an immersive historical journey, utilizing selected objects from the Al Ain Museum’s own collection to illustrate the evolution and significance of the Zaffa.

Beyond the academic discussion, the museum grounds were transformed into a living celebration of heritage. Attendees were treated to a live Emirati Zaffa performance, bringing the theoretical discussions to life with rhythmic authenticity. The atmosphere was further enriched by live demonstrations of traditional handicrafts and the serving of authentic Emirati cuisine, while interactive workshops kept younger visitors engaged with their cultural roots.

The event comes at a significant moment for this cultural practice. The talk was part of a broader national effort to celebrate intangible cultural heritage, following Al Zaffa’s recent inscription on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The designation formally recognizes the ritual’s enduring power to connect generations and sustain social bonds within the region.
