Dubai, UAE – While much of Europe enters its traditional tourism lull, the Czech Republic is spotlighting winter as a uniquely atmospheric season to explore its centuries-old heritage. A selection of castles and chateaus across the country remain open during the colder months, offering travellers quieter access to some of Central Europe’s most iconic historic sites.

Winter conditions transform Czechia’s architectural landmarks into tranquil cultural retreats, with snow-dusted towers and mist-covered landscapes enhancing their fairytale appeal. Tourism officials say the off-season setting allows visitors to experience royal history in a more intimate and reflective way, free from the congestion typical of spring and summer.

Leading the list of year-round attractions is Prague Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in the world. Key sites within the complex — including the Old Royal Palace, St. George’s Basilica, exhibition halls, and St. Vitus Cathedral — continue welcoming visitors throughout winter. Reduced visitor numbers provide a calmer environment to explore the seat of Czech kings and presidents.

Beyond the capital, Karlštejn Castle, founded in the 14th century by Emperor Charles IV, opens on selected winter dates. Nestled among forested hills southwest of Prague, the Gothic fortress offers access to historic royal interiors and presents a dramatic silhouette against the winter landscape.

Travellers venturing further into the countryside can visit chateaus such as Mníšek pod Brdy, where guided tours showcase well-preserved aristocratic living quarters from the early 20th century. In the Bohemian Paradise region, Dětenice Chateau caters to families with themed experiences and interactive tours designed to make history engaging for visitors of all ages.

These heritage sites are complemented by nearby historic towns, museums, and scenic rural areas, encouraging slower-paced travel and short cultural breaks. Although winter opening hours may be shorter, tourism representatives highlight benefits including more personalised tours and a peaceful atmosphere rarely found during peak periods.

With strong rail links, compact historic centres, and established hospitality infrastructure, Czechia is promoting itself as a year-round cultural destination. The winter initiative underscores a broader trend in European travel, where off-season tourism is increasingly valued for authenticity, comfort, and deeper engagement with local history.
