WICKED Makes History with First-Ever Middle East Opening at Dubai Opera

Dubai, UAE – Dubai Opera raised the curtain on a landmark cultural moment on 28 January as WICKED The Musical officially opened in the city, marking its first-ever performance in Dubai and its debut in the Middle East.

Presented by Broadway Entertainment Group in partnership with Dubai Opera, the internationally acclaimed production will run until 15 February 2026, bringing one of the world’s most successful stage musicals to local audiences for the first time.

A global theatrical phenomenon, WICKED has captivated more than 65 million people across 130 cities in 16 countries. The musical tells the untold story of the witches of Oz, long before Dorothy’s arrival, exploring themes of friendship, identity, and empowerment through the contrasting journeys of Elphaba and Glinda.

This new production features over 100 performers, crew, and orchestra members, alongside breathtaking sets, more than 350 costumes, and iconic musical numbers such as “Defying Gravity,” “Popular,” and “For Good.” A standout highlight includes a dramatic moment in which a witch flies over the audience—an unprecedented staging for any WICKED production worldwide.

Composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who attended the opening, described the occasion as deeply meaningful, calling Dubai the latest chapter in the musical’s two-decade journey of connecting audiences across the globe.

Broadway Entertainment Group CEO Liz Koops said the production also marks a significant milestone for the company, celebrating 15 years of bringing international theatre to Dubai. “There is no better way to commemorate this anniversary than with the most popular musical in the world,” she said.

Paolo Petrocelli, Head of Dubai Opera, noted that hosting WICKED reflects Dubai’s growing status as an international performing arts capital, capable of welcoming world-class productions and engaging diverse audiences.

The production stars Rebekah Lowings as Elphaba and Eve Shanu Wilson as Glinda, supported by a distinguished international cast with extensive West End and touring credentials.
