Singapore – Gastech 2023, the world’s premier gathering for natural gas, LNG, hydrogen, low-carbon solutions, and climate technologies, commenced today at the Singapore EXPO, setting new attendance records. The inaugural day witnessed thought-provoking contributions from influential figures in the energy sector, addressing the intricate challenges facing the global energy landscape. Discussions revolved around the pivotal roles of natural gas, LNG, and hydrogen in ensuring future energy security and expediting the energy transition, both in Asia and worldwide.

At the prestigious Gastech 2023 Gala Dinner held at the historic Raffles Hotel, Rt. Hon. Boris Johnson, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Leader of the Conservative Party, Foreign Secretary, and Mayor of London, underscored the present complexities of geopolitics and economics. He emphasized the dual challenge of addressing climate change while coping with surging energy demand. Johnson stressed the importance of global energy communities uniting to pursue a cleaner, more affordable, and secure energy future.

In his welcome address at the Gastech 2023 Opening Ceremony, H.E. Dr. Tan See Leng, Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, Singapore, acknowledged the profound energy transition the world is undergoing. He highlighted the critical role of natural gas in meeting the growing energy needs of Asia, reaffirming Singapore’s commitment to fulfill the region’s energy requirements.

The Strategic Conference commenced with a high-level dialogue among international energy ministers, focusing on how natural gas and LNG can satisfy immediate demand for low-carbon energy. H.E. Tarek El Molla, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, shared insights into the rapid expansion of natural gas and LNG in the region, emphasizing their pivotal roles in the energy transition.

Hon. Joseph McMonigle, Secretary General of the International Energy Forum (IEF), stressed the need for inclusive dialogue on decarbonization ahead of the COP28 Summit. He highlighted the importance of progress over perfection and advocated for the role of natural gas in global decarbonization efforts.

A CEO panel, featuring industry leaders from JERA Co., Inc, Baker Hughes, Woodside Energy, ADNOC, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Pavilion Energy, explored collaborative business models and partnerships aimed at transforming the global energy landscape. The panelists discussed innovative approaches to support a net-zero energy future, especially in challenging industries.

Another high-level session involved business leaders from ExxonMobil, Eni, Chevron, Shell, and Vitol, who delved into the dynamic global LNG market. They highlighted the industry’s resilience and its potential to meet future energy system demands, even as Europe’s LNG requirements are expected to outpace global supply capacity.

In a significant announcement, Venture Global LNG CEO Mike Sabel and Baker Hughes Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Simonelli revealed Venture Global LNG’s ambitious plan to increase LNG production capacity from 70 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to over 100 MTPA. This expansion initiative includes an expanded master equipment supply agreement with Baker Hughes for the delivery of liquefaction train systems and power island systems to support future export projects.

Mike Sabel, CEO of Venture Global LNG, expressed enthusiasm for this expansion, emphasizing the commitment to delivering cost-effective LNG to support global energy security and environmental progress. He also acknowledged the valuable partnership with Baker Hughes in advancing these projects.

Gastech 2023’s opening day showcased the energy industry’s dedication to addressing global challenges and embracing innovative solutions, making strides towards a sustainable and secure energy future. The event promises further insights and discussions in the days to come.
