Dubai, UAE – In a groundbreaking achievement, King’s College Hospital London has successfully conducted the first-ever liver transplantation in Dubai, marking a significant advancement in medical care for the region. The procedure, performed on a 38-year-old woman suffering from autoimmune hepatitis and liver cirrhosis, establishes Dubai’s capability to offer critical medical interventions previously unavailable locally.

King’s College Hospital London, the sole licensed facility for liver transplantation by the Dubai Healthcare Authority (DHA), led a team with extensive experience in liver transplants, having performed over 1500 such procedures. The patient’s condition, characterized by jaundice and liver failure, necessitated the four-hour surgery, led by Dr. Kaiser Raja, Dr. Parthiban Srinivasan, and Dr. Rakesh Rai.

Dr. Kaiser Raja highlighted the silent progression of liver cirrhosis, emphasizing the importance of early recognition and prevention. The successful transplantation not only signifies triumph over a rare liver condition but also showcases the hospital’s commitment to advanced liver care in the UAE.

The patient expressed deep gratitude to the dedicated medical team, acknowledging the second chance at life and the hope they have provided in the face of adversity. The hospital management extended thanks to the Ministry of Health and DHA for their pivotal support in establishing the liver transplantation program.

Notably, the UAE boasts the world’s fastest-growing rate of post-mortem organ donation. The Liver Transplantation Services at King’s College Hospital London align with the Hayat Organ Donation program’s objectives under the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention.

Dr. Parthiban emphasized the life-changing impact of organ donation, stating that the success of this transplantation exemplifies the kindness and generosity of patients and families in preventing the loss of loved ones. Dr. Kaiser Raja acknowledged the visionary guidance of Chairman H.E. Ahmed Al Tayer, highlighting the lasting imprint on Dubai’s healthcare landscape.

As the patient embarks on her recovery journey, this landmark liver transplantation serves as a beacon of hope for individuals facing severe liver conditions in the UAE, representing a significant stride in advanced medical care provision for the region.
