The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and The National Aquarium are set to rescue “Turtle 1,000”

Abu Dhabi, UAE – Abu Dhabi’s Environment Agency (EAD) and The National Aquarium (TNA) have achieved a remarkable milestone in their joint effort to protect marine life. In line with the Year of Sustainability, they have successfully rescued 1,000 sea turtles over the past four years. This groundbreaking achievement highlights the effectiveness of their Wildlife Rescue Program, the first of its kind in the UAE.

The program, launched in 2020, has significantly boosted efforts to conserve native wildlife in Abu Dhabi’s waters. With additional resources and cutting-edge facilities, the partnership aims to streamline the rescue and rehabilitation processes for sea turtles.

Dubbed “Turtle 1,000,” the journey of the latest rescue will be closely monitored and shared with the public through TNA’s website and social media platforms. Expert veterinarians will explain the rehabilitation process, fostering awareness and engagement.

Upon release back into the wild in the summer of 2024, Turtle 1000’s movements in the Arabian Gulf will be tracked via satellite tag, providing valuable insights into its post-rehabilitation journey.

Ahmed Al Hashmi, Executive Director at EAD, expressed pride in the milestone, emphasizing Abu Dhabi’s commitment to conservation and sustainability. Paul Robert Hamilton, General Manager of TNA, hailed the success as a testament to collaborative efforts in securing the future of endangered species.

The public’s support remains crucial to the program’s ongoing success. Hamilton encourages individuals who encounter distressed turtles to contact the Wildlife Rescue Program helpline (800 555), underscoring the importance of collective action in preserving marine ecosystems for future generations.

Visitors to TNA have had the opportunity to witness the rehabilitation process firsthand, while children participating in the Junior Marine Biologist Program have actively contributed to the turtles’ recovery.

The achievement of rescuing 1,000 sea turtles reflects Abu Dhabi’s leadership in wildlife conservation and reinforces the vision for a sustainable future.
