Dubai, UAE – The Allianz Risk Barometer’s recent survey reveals a growing concern among global respondents regarding cyber-attacks targeting critical infrastructure, ranking second only to geopolitical turmoil. With an increasing reliance on digital systems, the potential shutdown of critical infrastructure looms as a top priority for businesses worldwide.

Critical infrastructure, defined as systems vital to national security, public health, and economic stability, faces escalating cyber threats. The upcoming GISEC Global 2024 conference, scheduled for April 23-25 at Dubai World Trade Centre, aims to address these concerns by convening leading cybersecurity experts.

Dimitri van Zantvliet, Cybersecurity Director and CISO of Dutch Railways, warns that sectors providing essential services, such as energy, telecommunications, healthcare, finance, transportation, and government services, are prime targets. Legacy systems and increasing interconnectivity pose significant vulnerabilities, with breaches potentially triggering cascading failures across interconnected systems.

Transportation and energy sectors, highlighted by speakers like Mihir Joshi from Tata Power, face unique challenges. Cybercriminals exploit the data-rich nature and global interconnectivity of transportation services, while the energy sector grapples with supply chain vulnerabilities and escalating cyber threats.

Ransomware and social engineering remain persistent threats, with Pedro Cameirão of Nokia’s Cyber Defense Center underscoring their potential for widespread disruption and financial damage. Additionally, malicious botnets and DDoS attacks, exemplified by Cloudfare’s 2023 incident, pose significant risks, with the potential to endanger human lives by disrupting critical services.

Government intervention emerges as a crucial component of cybersecurity resilience. Van Zantvliet stresses the importance of governments in setting regulatory standards, facilitating information sharing, and providing financial incentives for robust cybersecurity measures. International cooperation between public and private sectors is deemed essential for combating cross-border cyber threats effectively.

As the global cybersecurity landscape evolves, the imperative to safeguard critical infrastructure grows more pressing. The GISEC Global 2024 conference serves as a vital platform for industry leaders to collaborate, share insights, and chart a course towards a cyber-secure future.
