Dubai, UAE – A high-level delegation from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) recently concluded a successful trip to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, marking a significant milestone in fostering education, research, and innovation ties between Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Led by HKUST President Prof. Nancy Ip, the delegation embarked on the journey during the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road initiative, signaling a concerted effort to enhance cooperation in innovation, technology, investment, and infrastructure development with key B&R members such as the UAE.
Over the course of four days from April 15 to 18, the HKUST delegation engaged in fruitful discussions and established valuable partnerships with prominent institutions and organizations in the UAE. These included the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF), the University of Sharjah, Khalifa University of Science and Technology (KU), the United Arab Emirates University, and Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence.
The focus of discussions centered on research collaboration, technology transfer, and talent development in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, medical technology, clean energy, and startup incubation. The delegation also had the privilege of meeting with Mr. Zhang Yiming, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the UAE, further solidifying diplomatic ties.
Two significant agreements were signed during the trip, underscoring HKUST’s commitment to advancing academic and research excellence and promoting cross-cultural exchange with the UAE. The first agreement with DFF entails joint research and knowledge transfer projects, incubation and exchange programs for startups, students, and researchers, as well as resource and facility sharing. The second agreement with the University of Sharjah focuses on academic collaboration, including dual degree programs, joint research programs, and exchange initiatives.
Moreover, the delegation explored collaboration opportunities with Khalifa University of Science and Technology (KU), showcasing a shared commitment to translating research outputs into societal impacts, particularly in areas such as biomedicine, AI, robotics, and sustainability.
In addition to institutional engagements, HKUST delegate Prof. Wang Yang, representing the university as the Executive President of the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA), attended the AUA President Forum hosted by the UAE University, emphasizing HKUST’s eagerness to support AUA’s initiatives in innovation and entrepreneurship.
HKUST’s increased engagement with Middle East stakeholders in recent years highlights its dedication to fostering meaningful partnerships and driving positive change globally. From receiving prominent officials to strengthening student recruitment efforts and showcasing advanced robotic technology at international conferences, HKUST continues to play a pivotal role in advancing collaboration and innovation across borders.
In the words of Prof. Nancy Ip, “I am excited about the many ways HKUST, with our unique edge in innovation, AI, and entrepreneurship, can work with partners in the UAE to drive technology advancements in the region while fostering academic cooperation.” This sentiment encapsulates the university’s vision for a future of collaboration, innovation, and impactful change.
