Dubai, UAE – New Zealand captain Sophie Devine delivered a commanding performance with both bat and ball as New Zealand secured a 58-run victory over India in the Women’s T20 World Cup on Friday.

Opting to bat first, New Zealand posted a challenging total of 160 for 4, courtesy of a stellar unbeaten knock of 57 from Devine off just 36 balls. The Kiwi openers, Suzie Bates (27) and Georgia Plimmer (34), provided a solid foundation with a 67-run stand before India’s Arundhati Reddy struck to break the partnership. Despite India’s bowlers attempting a comeback, Devine’s powerful innings ensured New Zealand reached a competitive score.

In response, India’s batting lineup faltered, with captain Harmanpreet Kaur top-scoring with just 15 runs. The Indian side struggled to build partnerships and lost wickets at regular intervals, eventually being bowled out for a mere 102 in 19 overs. New Zealand’s bowling attack was spearheaded by Rosemary Mair, who ripped through India’s batting order, taking 4 for 19. Lea Tahuhu also contributed with 3 wickets for 15 runs.

India’s lackluster performance with the bat highlighted their struggles against New Zealand’s disciplined bowling. This defeat leaves India with a lot to reflect on as they seek to bounce back in the tournament.

Brief Scores:
New Zealand: 160/4 in 20 overs (Sophie Devine 57*, Georgia Plimmer 34; Renuka Singh 2/27)

India: 102 all out in 19 overs (Harmanpreet Kaur 15; Rosemary Mair 4/19, Lea Tahuhu 3/15)
