Set a modest target of 119 runs after the West Indies posted 118-6, South Africa’s batters made light work of the chase, reaching the target without losing a wicket and with 13 balls to spare. Captain Laura Wolvaardt led the charge with a stellar performance, scoring 59 not out—the first half-century of the tournament. She was ably supported by Tazmin Brits, who also finished unbeaten on 57, as the pair forged an impressive partnership of 116 runs.
Earlier, left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba was the standout performer with the ball, taking 4 wickets for 29 runs. Marizanne Kapp contributed with 2 wickets for just 14 runs, including the crucial dismissal of West Indies captain Hayley Matthews, who managed only 10 runs.
Reflecting on her bowling strategy, Mlaba shared, “For me, it was just stay to the stumps; just don’t leave the stumps. That really worked for me, and the support from my mates, I will always be grateful for that.”
Wolvaardt and Brits’ opening partnership provided a solid foundation for South Africa’s innings, alleviating any nerves during the run chase. Mlaba expressed her excitement, stating, “It was amazing! I was sitting there in the changing rooms because it’s hot outside and I kept clapping ‘Yes man, they did well!’ I’m so happy for them.”
The West Indies struggled throughout their innings, with only Stafanie Taylor (44 not out) and Zaida James (15) offering any resistance late in the game. After losing key players Shemaine Campbelle and Chinelle Henry, the team found themselves in a precarious position at 83 runs for 6 wickets.
With this emphatic win, South Africa has signaled their intentions for the tournament as they look to build on last year’s runner-up finish against Australia.
