Dubai, UAE – The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) of the United Arab Emirates, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), recently held a pivotal workshop in Dubai. A major highlight of the event was the announcement of the UAE as the host of the first Regional Center of Excellence for Transforming Food Systems, a significant step aimed at driving innovation and transformation in food systems across the region.
The interactive workshop brought together key officials from MOCCAE, FAO, local authorities, academic institutions, and private sector stakeholders. The event focused on strengthening cooperation between the UAE and FAO to enhance sustainable national food security, aligning with the strategic objectives of the FAO Subregional Office for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) States and Yemen.
During the workshop, participants clarified the structure and mission of the FAO Subregional Office, discussing mechanisms for effective collaboration. The discussions emphasized the importance of addressing challenges in food security and agriculture and explored innovative solutions, particularly through the integration of modern, climate-smart technologies.
National Initiatives to Boost Agricultural Sector
His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Salman Al Hamadi, Assistant Undersecretary for Food Diversity at MOCCAE, highlighted the UAE’s commitment to enhancing food security through robust agricultural initiatives. He emphasized the launch of key national programs such as “Plant the Emirates” and the “National Agricultural Center”, which aim to unite stakeholders in finding solutions to the country’s agricultural challenges. These initiatives are designed to support local farmers, promote the use of smart technologies, and improve the quality and competitiveness of local agricultural production.
Dr. Al Hamadi also stressed that the FAO would play a vital role in supporting these national initiatives, reaffirming the UAE’s commitment to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders to advance the agricultural sector.
Strategic Partnership for Regional Food Security
Kayan Akram Jaff, Head of Mission for the FAO Subregional Office for the GCC States and Yemen, reiterated the FAO’s dedication to supporting the UAE’s food security efforts. He emphasized that the partnership will focus on strategic initiatives that align with the UAE’s national priorities and the overarching goals of the FAO.
Both MOCCAE and FAO reaffirmed their commitment to developing a roadmap for collaboration, aiming to strengthen food security across the region through innovative agricultural practices. This partnership marks a critical step toward addressing food security challenges and transforming agricultural systems in the UAE and beyond.
